Before choosing curtains in a room, you need to decide on the types of these products. Depending on where the curtains are supposed to be hung, they are divided into window (curtains, curtains and draperies) and door (curtains). Of course, curtains are selected to match the upholstery of the furniture and the carpet. If the floor is simply covered with laminate and the furniture in the room is leather, without blankets, then the curtains can serve as a bright accent.
The room, however, will look empty and uncomfortable if there are no curtains in it. In addition to the fact that properly selected curtains are one of the finishing touches of the interior, they also perform a number of useful functions: they help protect the room from the cold air flow in winter, obscure the room, and prevent excessive dust from entering the room.
This article gives tips on how to choose the right curtains of different types.
For curtains, thin, light, translucent fabrics (tulle, mesh cotton or synthetic fabric) are used. They can be white or light shades of pink, blue, green, yellow, beige; with light ornament or without it. How to choose such curtains for one window? In this case, the curtains are selected from two identical panels or one continuous. In order for the curtains on the window to look most advantageous, it is necessary to take fabrics about one and a half to two times the width of the window openings.
Curtains are made of denser, opaque fabrics, but not too heavy – mainly from natural and artificial silk, cotton, linen, satin, and thin velvet. Curtains hang over thin curtains.
In the daytime they are pushed apart, and the curtains can be left drawn up, as the light enters quite well through the transparent curtain curtain. Curtains and curtains must necessarily be in harmony with each other in color.
For window draperies, heavy opaque fabrics are used, often with a soft fleecy surface. They freely fit into uniform wide folds (folds), which gives the interior a special sophistication.
Curtains also serve to correct some of the imperfections in windows or doors in a room. For example, if you need to visually expand the size of the window, curtains and draperies can be hung on both sides of the window opening so that they cover a certain part of the wall on the right and left sides of the window.
On the contrary, so that the window opening appears narrower, curtains and draperies or curtains are attached to the cornice, which should not be wider than the window opening.
Curtains and curtains (draperies) in this case should reach the floor.
And which curtains to choose to create the impression of a single wide window opening? To do this, curtains and curtains (draperies) are hung from the cornice in the entire length of the room wall. At the same time, they will look much better if they reach almost the floor.
If in the immediate vicinity of the window it is supposed to put a desk or equip a zone for children’s games, the length of the curtains should only reach the windowsill or a little lower.
Another urgent question – how to pick up curtains in a room to drape a doorway? Such curtains are sewn mainly from dense, heavy decorative fabrics. They are usually hung up when there is a need for sound or light insulation of an adjacent room or a separate functional area. They are hung from the side where the door to the room opens.
When deciding which curtains to hang in a room where the walls are glued with plain wallpaper without ornament, you can use a fabric with a medium-sized and discreet pattern. When the walls are covered with wallpaper with a pattern, materials with a small, preferably classic pattern are used. The use of smooth plain fabrics is entirely appropriate.
If thin transparent curtains made of tulle and blackout curtains or draperies are hung on the window at the same time, then some of them should be plain.
And how to choose curtains for a small room? For curtains and draperies in a room of small dimensions (9-15 m2) with a fairly low ceiling, fabrics with a small, discreet pattern or pattern are more acceptable, since large details will contribute to a visual reduction in the size of an already cramped room. In rooms of large size (16-25 m2 or more), with high (from 3 m) ceilings, there is more freedom in choosing fabrics for curtains. They can have a fairly large and rich pattern.
To choose curtains for the interior of a room with a modest decor, in which there are no expensive, eye-catching things, keep in mind that curtains and draperies made of luxurious fabrics will look inappropriate. Here, curtains made of soft, light fabrics are suitable. The fabric pattern should not be intrusive. The best thing is a classic vertical strip, a small flower or a simple geometric ornament. Curtains made of linen, viscose, artificial silk in a small cage look original in modestly furnished rooms.
For draperies or curtains made of expensive beautiful fabrics – velvet, heavy silk, satin – curtains can be made with lining – so that the hanging folds of the fabric are more clearly marked and look deeper. In addition, the lining fabric will protect the inside of the curtains from burning out under the influence of sunlight and dust.
Matching ruffles to curtains
If you already know what curtains to hang in the room, but you still think that the interior will look too boring and unoriginal, without a “twist”, this drawback can be easily fixed if you decorate the curtains or curtains with a decorative frill framing their upper and lower parts or just the top is a matter of taste. The rim is cut from the same fabric as the curtains, along the entire length of the cornice so that it hangs freely in soft deep folds. This continuous strip of fabric is attached to the cornice separately, and curtains consisting of two or one continuous panel are suspended behind it. The length of the frill can be different, preferably frills, dropping about 30-40 cm.
The rim can be sewn to the upper edge of the curtain by cutting strips of fabric of equal length corresponding to the width of each curtain curtain. However, in this case, it is better to flush them before washing.
If frills are sewn both on the top and on the bottom of the curtain, you should pay special attention to the fact that all lines are symmetrical on both panels.
Of course, it is not necessary to adhere to generally accepted standards in this matter. You can cut a frill for curtains from a material that is uniform in texture, but of a different color, harmonizing in shade or, conversely, in contrast. This will take a little longer and require additional costs for the purchase of a fabric of a different color.
However, you can unleash your imagination. For example, beige fabric curtains can be decorated with a frill of chocolate-colored fabric or white fabric in beige or brown stripes. Navy blue curtains will perfectly enliven a border of blue fabric. Curtains with a light green or light green hue will give the border solidity a more rich and rich green color. If the curtains are decorated with a pattern or ornament, the frill can be cut out from a plain fabric.
Curtains are an excellent decoration of window openings, which are not just pulled apart on both sides of the window, but held in the middle by a beautiful twisted cord with tassels.
How to choose the color of the curtains to the interior of the room
The choice of colors for curtains (both curtains and draperies) is determined, of course, by the tastes of the owners of the apartment, as well as the color of wallpaper, upholstery of furniture and carpet, the size of the room and its purpose. However, a well-chosen color of the curtains can help to some extent correct the disadvantages of natural lighting. So, if the room windows face the north, shadow side, then curtains of warm colors can create an additional lighting effect in such a room. Therefore, for more darkened rooms, it is recommended to select, if possible, curtains, draperies and drapes of yellow, yellow-golden, red, orange, yellow-green.
And how to choose the color of the curtains for rooms with the orientation of the windows on the sunny, south side? Curtains and draperies of cold shades are suitable here: all shades of blue, green, purple are included here. Such a color scheme muffles the hot sun’s rays and creates a more relaxed atmosphere in the room, conducive to a good rest.
