Technique of performing blocks: herringbone, log hut, well, triangles, mill and grandmother's garden in patchwork, step by step

Execution techniques and patterns in the patchwork patchwork technique seem complicated at first glance. Even if you never held a thread with a needle in your hands, it will not be difficult for you to master this technique. To do this, you need to have several colors of fabrics, a minimum of tools, a little free time and a little imagination.

There are a huge number of techniques and techniques for stitching shreds of fabric. On this page, detailed master classes on creating only a few types of blocks are presented, which can then be combined into a single product. Having mastered them, you can truly create original and interesting things for yourself and your loved ones.

Christmas patchwork: step-by-step execution

Christmas tree patchwork – sew alternating multi-colored stripes, resulting in a pattern that resembles a Christmas tree or parquet.

Take three green shades, 3 beige shades, as well as striped fabric and terracotta colors. All strips will need to be made 5 cm wide, and the length should be measured separately for each strip during sewing.

7 – In order to sew the second tier, sew a green strip to the lower edge of the first tier as described above: the fabric is 5 cm wide, the length is equal to the side of the main fragment of the block to which we sew a new strip.

8 – Sew a beige Christmas tree strip in the same way.

10 – In this case, 6 tiers were obtained. Finish your Christmas tree with terracotta stripes.

Experiment with color. In this case, a multi-colored square is made at the very beginning of the block, and then strips for tiers in the colors of this square are selected. Finish the block with a terracotta color in harmony with the first striped square.

We sew a block of a hut – a well using the patchwork technique

Well patchwork is considered one of the simplest. Its base is a square, which is lined with strips of fabric. In the classic version, if the central square is red, then the block is called “hut”, if blue – “well”. But you can make it of any other color, depending on which product you want to sew in this technique.

Choose the color of the fabric for the strip to your liking. All the strips with which you will sew the square are the same width. The length of the strips must be measured each time before stitching parts.

The following is a detailed patchwork technique for beginners step by step, following which you will sew a finished block:

1 – Cut a 6 × 6 cm pattern from cardboard. Cut a square from the fabric, leaving 0.5-0.6 cm seam allowances (which corresponds to the width from the needle to the edge of the foot when sewing).

Important!
Block hut in the patchwork is done strictly in a spiral. If you started to sew clockwise, then continue to the end of the block. If counterclockwise, then the same.
In this case, the unit is sewn clockwise.

2 -According to the pattern, cut out the rectangle, but from the beige fabric, and stitch it on the left to the red square. Align the edges if necessary and measure the long side of the resulting rectangle.

3 – Cut a rectangle of 10 x 6 cm from the fabric of the next color and sew it as shown in the photo. Carefully iron all seams.

The seams in the patchwork are usually ironed on one darker side, so I ironed on the red side.
4 –
If the patchwork technique is followed, then you will get a rectangle 10 x 12 cm.

5 – On the right edge of the block, attach a strip of width 6 cm and a length equal to the right side of the resulting fragment (10 cm), of the fourth color fabric. Pin it with pins perpendicular to the seam and stitch it. Then iron the seam carefully.

6 – Take the next strip of fabric of another color, also 6 cm wide (the 5th color in our block), attach to the bottom edge, cut, pin with pins.

7 – Stitch, remove the pins and iron the seam to one side. Align all edges with a circular knife or scissors.

8 – Proceed to the second round. To the left side of the square, attach a strip of beige fabric 6 cm wide, pin with pins, stitch and iron. This is the 6th color in our block.

9 – Similarly stitch a strip of another shade of beige color 6 cm wide to the top of the block.

Working step by step in the patchwork technique – you will get a finished block.

10 – You can dwell on this option, or you can continue to sew the strips clockwise until you are satisfied with the size of the block. For example, if you want to sew a pillow 40 x 40 cm, then you need to continue to sew the strips to the desired size.

11 – Stripes of fabric of the same color should not be next to each other. Please note that on the right side of the block I have pink fabrics, and on the left – beige. You can make a block in different versions, for example, to place dark stripes on the right, different in color, and on the left – light (approximately the same as shown in the photo).

12 – Finish the block with a strip of red 6 cm wide. In total, 3 circles of strips are obtained that are not in contact anywhere in the drawing.

The well can be sewn from strips of different widths, take fabric of different colors, it all depends on your imagination and desire.

Patchwork block – funny triangles

The triangles block in the patchwork is one of the basic ones; it is also called funny triangles. The cutting technology will allow you to get four triangles from two squares at once, from which you can then assemble a large number of original patterns.

To complete this technique, you will need fabric in two different colors.

4 – Expand each resulting triangle. Iron the seams from the wrong side to the darker side (if ironed to the light side, the seams will be visible from the front side of the light fabric). Align the edges. It turned out squares with a side of 15 cm

Thus, for beginners in the patchwork technique, you can make the necessary number of triangles from different fabrics, from which you will collect numerous patterns in the future (hence the name – “funny triangles”). You can get acquainted with this technique in more detail at the mill block, where the triangles are located in a pattern resembling the wings of a mill.

How to sew a block mill in a patchwork

In order to sew a patchwork mill – you need a fabric of two different colors.

2 – In total, 4 squares turned out – two of each color.

Important!
To choose harmonious colors, lay out the fabrics that you like on the table and see how they fit together.

3 – Use the following patchwork patchwork technique: fold the squares of different colors in pairs with their front sides and pin them with pins so that they do not move relative to each other. Then draw a diagonal line connecting the opposite corners of the squares.

7 – Now sew two squares with each other, after having chipped with pins the side on which the seam will be laid. In this case, it is important to precisely combine all the angles and lines, they must match.

8 – Sew the second pair of squares in the same way.

9 – It turned out two parts of the block.

11 –Iron the resulting block from the wrong side (especially all seams), then from the front. The mill block is ready.

That’s why the patchwork for beginners is good, because you choose and combine the techniques and ideas yourself. Other patterns can be added from the resulting squares.

Patchwork grandmother’s garden or honeycombs

The block in the patchwork of the grandmother’s garden or honeycombs consists of regular hexagons and resembles bee honeycombs in appearance – hence the name.

You need to start the block with the template. Your “honeycombs” can be either very small or large, but I suggest first to sew a medium-sized honeycomb – with a side of 5 cm.

    1. Cut a square with a side of 10 cm from cardboard. Using a compass, draw a circle in it and divide it into 6 parts. Connect the dots – you get an inscribed hexagon with a side of 5 cm, as shown in the photo.
2 – Cut out 6 more such hexagonal patterns from cardboard.

3 – Use the following patchwork technique: apply the first pattern to the fabric for the center of the block and cut out the hexagon with allowance for the seams. In the same way, carve 6 more hexagons of different colors.

4 – Then lay the template on the seamy side of the part, fasten it in the center with a pin and iron the seam allowances, bending them on the seamy side.

5 – Pull the corners of the fabric on the wrong side with a needle and thread. To do this, first fasten the corners with pins so that they do not diverge, and then sew each corner with a simple stitch over the edge.

6 – All finished parts must be assembled into a “flower”. Select the center hexagon and connect it to other hand-sewn stitches. On the sides of the honeycomb, the seams remain open. 30

7 – Then, carefully remove the template from the center part.

10 – You will get a ready block “cell”. Then it all depends on your idea. You can continue to sew hexagons to make a larger canvas or sew your “flower” as a decorative element on a bag, pillow, stitching it along the very edge around the entire perimeter of the product.

At the end, look at the basics of the patchwork technique in the video, where step by step all the steps of patchwork are shown:
